Atenas, Costa Rica, is located in the Alajuela Province about 15 miles from Alajuela and 22 miles from San Jose, the capital. Known for its spectacular weather and surrounded by coffee plantations and mountains, Atenas has a population of about 7,700. The town center boasts a pretty park, a white church, and a weekly farmers’ market. There are many shops, bed-and-breakfasts, and restarurants as well. While in Atenas, make sure to try the local specialty for dessert: toronjas rellenas, or stuffed grapefruit!
